Searching for a new Calypso
Hi guys,
As I mentioned on my YouTube channel, we are looking for a larger boat and will be putting the current Calypso up for sale in a couple of months. Our current boat, a 2000 Searay 310 Sundancer which is 33 feet overall and 11.5 feet wide has been a great boat for the family, but we would like to find a boat that offers a little bit more:
- A bit larger with more room and storage
- Offers greater privacy for guests
- Greater range so we can cruise further
- Greater range so we can cruise further
- Diesel engines for greater efficiency
We have been happy with the Searay brand in terms of build quality, features and seakeeping ability so that’s where we are going to start. We have our eye on the Searay 400 Sedan Bridge. The model was made from 1996 through 2004. however, we are interested in a model year 2001 or newer boat. This boat is a two stateroom, two head boat with a flybridge and cockpit. The 400 Sedan Bridge was powered by either gas or diesel -we are interested in a diesel boat.
Depending on the year, The boat was offered with either Caterpillar 3126 6 cyl turbocharged 350 hp engines or Cummins 6CTA 8.3 turbocharged 420hp engines.
Either engine works well in the boat and offers around 1 mile to the gallon at 20 knots which is a large improvement over the current Calypso which gets .82 MPG at 18knots.
The 400 also holds 375 gallons of fuel which is 175 more than the current 310. This should give us a range of 340 miles with a 10% reserve, compared to 145 miles we can travel today.
While there are several boats of this model available, when you start limiting the list to newer boats, diesel only and located within a reasonable distance from the Boston area, the list starts to get smaller.
We are on the lookout and will take you with us as we look at any prospects.
